"A Greener PACOM"
Dear all,
Greetings from Korea! It is a time of humidity, scorching sunlight and the occasional downpours.
While the rains were heavy this year, it was definitely not as bad as last year, when we had unprecedented amounts of concentrated rainfall that caused flooding and landslides across the country. Put it this way--we did not have to hurriedly move boxes of product onto elevated railings this year.
PACOM has returned from its summer break in the first week of August, and we are now fully into the second half of the year.
Let's get started!
Back in the U.S.
In July, PACOM President Mr. K.S. Kim and I were in the U.S., this time on the West Coast--the one section of the country my June trip did not cover. Being in town to meet one of our biggest clients, as well as check in on a few other friends and partners in the SoCal region. All in all, the trip was very fruitful, with some crucial details for our 2024 production now confirmed as well as other vital matters!
It was great to be back in the U.S. although to be honest, I wasn't expecting to return there so soon after trekking across the country in June. Nevertheless, I learned a lot during the trip, and can't wait for PACOM's next excursion, which will most likely be in Frankfurt for the Buchmesse. For those of you attending, let us know if you would like to meet with PACOM at Frankfurt, and we will be happy to accommodate you!
In the meantime, please enjoy this picture of a Southern California sunset.
PACOM's environmental efforts
At PACOM, we've tried to improve our processes across the board, but there is one aspect that I don't think I've ever touched on in that regard. In addition to efficiency, PACOM has consistently looked for ways to lower our environmental footprint, and have taken measures to do what we can in that regard. For instance, in addition to our certifications (which can be seen here), PACOM has:
Reduced its wastewater emissions and electricity consumption constantly over the past decade;
Installed a solar panel system to provide green energy to its plant;
Switched to soy-based ink to reduce VOC emissions;
Switched to chemical-free CTP plates;
Switched the motors on its forklifts to reduce emissions;
And these are just a few of the changes we've made over the course of many years. While the nature of the industry requires the consumption of paper, there is no rule that says other parts of the process can't be made greener and cleaner, and PACOM will strive to make headway in those areas moving forward.
New equipment
A new offset press is currently undergoing installation in the bottom floor of the PACOM facility. The Roland 700 Evolution Speed is capable of printing 20k sheets per hour, and will be an invaluable tool in beefing up PACOM's capacity.
Other equipment is on the way through the year, each aimed at diversifying what PACOM can do in its all-encompassing printing and binding facility. We're incredibly excited!
Independence Day
Tomorrow (August 15) is Korean Independence Day, and so PACOM will be closed for the day.
On an unrelated note, one of the biggest movies of the summer, Oppenheimer, is set to open in Korea on that day.
Judging by the subject matter, I think that there will be quite the Korean audience for it on that day specifically. If you know, you know.
That is all for this edition of PACOM Update. Everyone stay safe out there, and until next time!
